July 2010: Credit card debt: The BBA figures show that consumers are
adopting a 'safety-first' approach to unsecured borrowing such as credit
card spending this year. Overall, repayments have outstripped new borrowing
by 2.7% over the past year, so that whilst borrowing on credit cards rose by
£120m in June, repayments of personal loans and overdrafts outstripped new
borrowing by over £300m and new lending in personal loans was around 20%
lower than a year ago.
